Lindsey’s homers lifts Lyco baseball to first win of season

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior third baseman Brody Lindsey became the first Lycoming College baseball player since the program’s reinstatement to homer twice in a game to lead the team to its first win of the season, 6-5, against Marymount University (Va.) in non-conference action at Smith Stadium on Sunday.

Lindsey finished 2-for-5 with two homers and four RBI to pace the Warriors (1-5 overall) and senior first baseman Danny DeLucas (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) went 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI and first-year second baseman Kaden Shay – a South Williamsport grad – also added a hit, two walks and two runs.

Junior Jake Wilber (1-1) earned the win with four innings of relief, allowing six hits, three walks and two runs. Sophomore Grayson Rinker – a Montoursville grad – shut the door on the Saints, tossing 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief to earn the save, allowing just one walk.

The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when DeLucas was walked before Lindsey delivered a two-run homer to center field. After Marymount (5-1 overall) got a run back in the second, the Warriors took a 3-1 lead in the third as Shay walked, DeLucas singled up the middle to move him to third, allowing Shay to score on a wild pitch.

The Saints tied the game with a pair of runs in the third, but the Warriors took the lead back in the fifth off Lindsey’s second two-run homer, again driving in DeLucas who reached on a walk, but this time depositing the ball over the left field fence.

Marymount got a run in the fifth, which the Warriors answered in the seventh, as Shay walked, stole second and scored on a single to center field by DeLucas. The Saints got a run back in the seventh and loaded the bases with two outs, but Rinker induced a popup to end the inning.

The Warriors loaded the bases in the ninth, but a fly out ended the rally without breaking the game open. Rinker delivered a 1-2-3 ninth, with junior Josh Bottger chasing down a pair of fly balls in center field, the second on the warning track, before a grounder to short ended the game.

Quincy Via, Andrew Schaeb and Gary Ellenburg each had two hits for the Saints, with Schaeb adding two RBI and Via posting a run and a double. Liam Progulske (0-1) allowed two hits, two walks and three runs in two innings. He struck out one.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, March 1, when they host Vassar College at 11 a.m. to start a non-conference doubleheader at Brandon Park.

Starting at $2.99/week.
